I remember clearly the discussions in the late nineties: was Turkey eligible to become a member state of the EU. I lived in Amsterdam by then.
Most people supported the idea to get Turkey 'in'. But it was weird to hear that the Turkish people in the Netherlands warned us, and I am not talking about Kurdish Turks, I am talking about Turkish people from Istanbul, Izmir, and other developed cities. All of them said 'No'.
As I understand, most of them are living a relatively 'happy life' in the Netherlands. And are not eager to migrate to Turkey. Since they have more freedom to express their opinion and life style there than in Turkey.

In fact, the discussion will be on line on:
This is the site of the the Dutch VPRO's Tegenlicht over the documentary of Oct. 8:

Dear Hans,
When EU membership heated up, I was kind of yeah, it will be nice to be membership of EU, after then bringing up alL those rules and regulations which were fair enough but bit taugh though. then like most of Turk started to cooldown regarding the idea of Membership. aspecially after Bulgaria and Romenia's Membership:)
I give EU another 35 years or so! then will be worthless..
Dear Derya,
I agree, it will take some time, and Turkey is going through a lot of changes, but I am hopeful.
regards
